Padres rookie right-hander Chris Paddack had a no-hitter through seven innings before giving up a home run in San Diego's 3-2 win over the host Miami Marlins on Wednesday.

Starlin Castro homered to lead off the eighth for Miami's first hit.

Paddack, 23, allowed the one hit over 7 2/3 innings. He issued one walk and had eight strikeouts in the win. Paddack (6-4) threw 94 pitches in his 16th major league start.

Paddack, who was originally drafted by the Marlins, was working on a perfect game before Cesar Puello reached base to open the sixth inning on a throwing error by shortstop Fernando Tatis Jr. Puello was eliminated on a double play, but pinch hitter Yadiel Rivera drew a two-out walk. Paddack got out of the frame with a groundout.

Paddack retired the two hitters after Castro's homer before being relieved by Craig Stammen, who gave up a second hit to the Marlins on Bryan Holiday's single to left. Castro's homer also ended a run of 17 2/3 straight scoreless innings pitched by Paddack.

The Padres survived a two-error ninth to end a four-game losing streak at the start of the season's second half.

Back-to-back throwing errors by San Diego second baseman Greg Garcia and Tatis put the Marlins' first two hitters of the ninth on base. Padres closer Kirby Yates struck out Garrett Cooper and Brian Anderson before Castro singled home Miami's second run. But Yates sealed his 31st save by striking out Curtis Granderson.

The Padres scored all their runs with two outs in the fourth off Marlins right-hander Trevor Richards (3-11).

Manuel Margot started the rally with a two-out double to right, and he scored on Garcia's single. Austin Hedges, who returned to the Padres from bereavement leave Tuesday, followed with a two-run homer that skipped off the top of the fence in right.

Richards gave up three runs on eight hits and three walks with five strikeouts in five innings.
