Dylan Covey allowed two hits in 8 1/3 scoreless innings as the Chicago White Sox defeated the host Seattle Mariners 5-0 Saturday night at Safeco Field.

Outfielder Avisail Garcia, making his return from his second stint on the 10-day disabled list because of a right hamstring strain, hit a three-run homer for the White Sox.

Covey (4-5), a right-hander, walked two and struck out five. He certainly made good use of the All-Star break, as he had lost his previous three starts -- in which he allowed 18 earned runs on 22 hits in 11 innings (14.73 ERA).

Dee Gordon broke up the no-hit bid by lining a single up the middle with one out in the sixth inning. The only other Mariners hit was Jean Segura's one-out single in the ninth, which ended Covey's night.

Seattle's Mitch Haniger greeted reliever Joakim Soria with a long fly ball, but left fielder Leury Garcia leaped at the fence to take away a home run and maintain the shutout.

The Mariners had their 10-game winning streak snapped against opponents from the American League Central.

Seattle right-hander Felix Hernandez (8-8), making his return from the 10-day DL because of lower-back stiffness, allowed four runs (three earned) on five hits in five innings. He walked two and struck out seven.

Hernandez struck out the side in both the second and third innings before running into trouble in the fourth, when the White Sox snapped a scoreless tie.

Yolmer Sanchez led off the inning with a single to center, and Jose Abreu was hit by a pitch. After Daniel Palka lined out, Avisail Garcia hammered the next pitch over the center field wall for his 10th homer of the season. Omar Narvaez doubled and Leury Garcia singled to center, with outfielder Ben Gamel's fielding error allowing Narvaez to score to make it 4-0.

The White Sox made it 5-0 in the ninth on a leadoff single by Narvaez, a one-out double by Nicky Delmonico and Tim Anderson's sacrifice fly.
