NEW YORK -- Jose Reyes continued turning back the clock Monday afternoon, even as the nostalgic yearnings that helped bring him back to the New York Mets seemed farther away than ever.

Playing hours after learning that his longtime friend and teammate David Wright needed another season-ending surgery, Reyes homered, collected two RBIs and reached base four times Monday as the Mets beat the Philadelphia Phillies 11-7 at Citi Field.

Reyes scored a run in a career-high 10th straight game while extending his hitting streak to 10 games, his longest since 2015. He is batting .444 (16-for-36) during the streak to raise his overall average to a season-high .238 and make a case for himself as a utility player next season on the rebuilding Mets, whose lineup Monday featured three rookies.

"He's a guy that just said, 'Look, I'll do whatever I have to do to play,' and he's done that," Mets manager Terry Collins said. "He's played second. He's played short. He's played third. Fortunately, he's gotten hot at the right time for us and he's a guy that certainly I think is going to establish himself as a very, very good extra player."

If the 34-year-old Reyes is going to continue to serve as that extra player for the Mets, he'll likely do so without Wright next to him on the field and in the clubhouse.

Wright, who has played in just 75 games the last three seasons due to neck, back and shoulder injuries, will have his right rotator cuff repaired on Tuesday. He hasn't played in the majors since May 26, 2016, and was limited to just three minor league rehab games this year.

"When I signed here last year, I was very happy about (the possibility) at some point that I was going to have the opportunity to play beside David (at) third base and me (at) shortstop," said Reyes, who played with Wright from 2004 through 2011 before exiting as a free agent. Reyes re-signed with the Mets last June after being released by the Colorado Rockies following a domestic violence arrest.

Reyes and Wright rank among the franchise's all-time top 10 in 11 offensive categories and are 1-2 -- Wright followed by Reyes -- in runs, hits, doubles and multi-hit games. They'll add another 1-2 punch to the list if Reyes collects five more extra-base hits to move past Darryl Strawberry and into second place in the franchise record book.

"It hasn't happened yet," Reyes said of the reunion with Wright. "Hopefully, it can happen in the near future. We don't know."

Juan Lagares got the Mets on the board Monday with an RBI single in the second before Reyes keyed big rallies in the third and fourth innings.

Reyes homered with one out in the third, after which Nori Aoki doubled and Asdrubal Cabrera hit a two-run shot to extend the Mets' lead to 4-0. Gavin Cecchini's two-run single jump-started a six-run fourth in which Reyes collected an RBI single, went first to third on a groundout and scored the fourth run of the inning on a wild pitch.

Aoki (run-scoring groundout) and Brandon Nimmo (run-scoring single) added RBIs later in the inning for the Mets, who sent 11 batters to the plate.

The extended rally impacted Mets starter Rafael Montero (4-9), who allowed one hit through the first four innings before allowing seven of the final 10 batters he faced to reach base in the fifth and sixth innings.

Cameron Rupp delivered a run-scoring groundout in the fifth before the Phillies scored four times in the sixth, when Nick Williams raced home on a wild pitch and Hyun Soo Kim (two-run double) and Andres Blanco (RBI single) had run-scoring hits against Paul Sewald.

Montero was charged with four runs on five hits and five walks while striking out three. He won consecutive starts for the first time as a major leaguer.

Nimmo (3-for-4) added an RBI single in the sixth for the Mets (59-78), who snapped a four-game losing streak.

Freddy Galvis and Odubel Herrera each added an RBI single in the ninth for the Phillies, who forced Collins to call on closer AJ Ramos to get the final out in a non-save situation.

"We came up short, but it's good to see these guys playing through nine innings," Phillies manager Pete Mackanin said.

Blanco had three hits despite not entering the game until the fifth inning.

Rookie right-hander Mark Leiter Jr. (2-5) took the loss after allowing nine runs (eight earned), nine hits and no walks while striking out two in 3 1/3 innings. Leiter is the nephew of former Mets ace left-hander Al Leiter, who was a teammate of Reyes and Wright in 2004.

"It's close to home and it's cool and I like the people here," Leiter said. "Just wish the results went differently."

NOTES: The Mets announced that 3B David Wright will undergo right rotator cuff surgery on Tuesday. Wright hasn't played in the majors since May 27, 2016, because of neck and shoulder injuries. ... Mets IF T.J. Rivera (right elbow) will undergo Tommy John surgery this week. ... The Phillies activated OF Aaron Altherr (right hamstring) and CF Odubel Herrera (left hamstring) from the 10-day disabled list. ... The Phillies are 3-2 on an 11-game road trip, the franchise's longest road trip since 2006. ... The Mets improved to 26-35-1 on Labor Day and the Phillies fell to 88-103.
