CHICAGO -- It's been a disappointing season for the Chicago White Sox, so any chance they get to celebrate should not be overlooked.

Saturday night at U.S. Cellular Field, one of those opportunities presented itself and they gladly celebrated. Reserve infielder Leury Garcia laced a two-out walk-off single in the bottom of the ninth inning to beat the Detroit Tigers 4-3, and he was promptly mobbed by happy teammates.

"It was awesome, fun," said Garcia, who'd entered the game in the eighth as a pinch-runner. "I was ready, and I had the opportunity to hit. I put the ball in play and (just wanted to) see what happens."

Garcia's hit capped a two-run rally in the ninth for the White Sox (76-85), who fell behind 3-2 in the top half of the frame. Tigers right-hander Neftali Feliz, who allowed both runs and took the loss, intentionally walked slugger Jose Abreu to bring up Garcia.

"I was on deck, and as soon as I saw them walk Abreu, I said, 'OK, I got it,'" Garcia said.

The victory assured the White Sox they wouldn't finish behind the Tigers (73-87) in last place of the American League Central, with the season finale left to play Sunday.

Detroit took the lead in its half of the ninth on a pinch-hit double by catcher James McCann, whose hit off left-hander Dan Jennings scored Rajai Davis from second.

Feliz (3-4) relieved right-hander Drew VerHagen to pitch the ninth, after VerHagen threw two scoreless innings relieving starter Justin Verlander.

Feliz walked right fielder Avisail Garcia to start the inning. He then allowed a one-out double to J.B. Shuck that scored Garcia with the tying run and gave up the game-ending single to Garcia.

"You know, everybody is pulling for (Leury)," White Sox manager Robin Ventura said. "I think guys are just happy for him. It's a big hit. To come up in a big spot like that and be able to do it is fun. Any walk-off's fun."

Right-hander Nate Jones (2-2) enjoyed it. He earned the win after throwing a scoreless third of an inning in the ninth.

It wasn't quite as pleasant for the Tigers, but they too are finishing up a disappointing campaign.

Verlander pitched well again to close out his season, but took a no-decision after allowing two runs on five hits and striking out nine. After missing the first two months of the season, Verlander struggled to regain his form until August.

Once he got it back, the Tigers' ace looked like his dominant self through the final two months. In a season of unmet expectations for the entire team, it's something to build off for next season.

"I think he has shown his doubters that he's still a top-of-the rotation guy," Tigers manager Brad Ausmus said.

Detroit first baseman Miguel Cabrera went 3-for-4 and hit a two-run homer. Cabrera, who isn't likely to play Sunday, is in line to win his fourth American League batting title with a .338 batting average.

His home run, which barely cleared the fence in right-center field, was Cabrera's first since Aug. 26, a span of 125 plate appearances.

"He's very gifted with the bat," Ausmus said. "I haven't come across a hitter like Miggy."

Right-hander Erik Johnson started for the White Sox and, like Verlander, was saddled with a no-decision. He yielded two runs in 6 1/3 innings and hopes to have left a good impression that will stick around for the start of spring training in 2016.

"I thought I made a little progress with every start," Johnson said. "I wanted to go deeper in the game with a more proficient pitch count. I thought I accomplished that."

After falling behind 2-1 on Cabrera's homer in the top of the sixth, the White Sox knotted it 2-2 in the bottom half on a two-out double by shortstop Alexei Ramirez that scored rookie left fielder Trayce Thompson from first.

The Tigers put the potential go-ahead run at second base in the seventh and eighth, but couldn't convert either opportunity against relievers Zach Duke and Jake Pericka.

The White Sox put a runner on third in the seventh and eighth, each time with two outs, but VerHagen got out of the threat each time.

NOTES: Tigers 1B Miguel Cabrera was back in the starting lineup Saturday after getting Friday off. Cabrera is batting .338 and will win his fourth AL batting title in the last five seasons. ... White Sox RHP Matt Albers boasts a scoreless streak of 22 1/3 innings and 20 straight appearances. "You start next year, who knows, but I know right now he's the hot hand and he's been pitching great," Chicago manager Robin Ventura said. "For us, when you get toward the end of the game you're going with the guys that have been doing it."
