NEW YORK -- Alex Rodriguez drove in four runs, and the New York Yankees scored seven times in the top of the first inning en route to a 14-4 rout of the Boston Red Sox on Sunday night.

Rodriguez hit a three-run double off Boston right-hander Clay Buchholz (1-1) in New York's biggest inning of the season. The designated hitter added a bases-loaded walk in the Yankees' three-run sixth inning.

New York third baseman Chase Headley (3-for-5) and second baseman Stephen Drew homered in the first inning, and catcher Brian McCann added a solo home run in the eighth.

Besides his second home run in three games, Headley added a run-scoring single in the sixth. Left fielder Brett Gardner contributed a two-run single and also scored the game's first run.

First baseman Mark Teixeira and Drew added sacrifice flies for the Yankees, who had 16 hits. Every New York starter had a hit, and four Yankees finished with multi-hit games.

New York came into the game hitting .193 with 17 runs through five games, and it led for one of its first 55 innings. The Yankees were in danger of posting their first 1-5 start since opening the 1989 season with seven losses in eight games.

All of the offense came on a night when Masahiro Tanaka (1-0) entered with questions about his velocity. After lasting four innings April 6, the right-hander went an inning further Sunday and allowed four runs (three earned) and four hits while ending his outing by striking out third baseman Pablo Sandoval on a pitch clocked at 92 mph.

Left fielder Hanley Ramirez drove two runs for the Red Sox with a sacrifice fly and a solo home run. Shortstop Xander Bogaerts added a two-run double for Boston, which failed in a bid for its first 5-1 start since 2006.

Buchholz allowed a career-high 10 runs (nine earned) and nine hits over 3 1/3 innings.

The Yankees took a 1-0 lead in the first when center fielder Jacoby Ellsbury walked, reached third on a base hit by Gardner and scored on right fielder Carlos Beltran's groundout. After first baseman Mike Napoli dropped McCann's ground ball, Rodriguez drove a first-pitch fastball to deep left field for a 4-0 advantage.

Headley made it 6-0 by driving a 2-2 curveball into the second deck in right field and Drew followed by sending a 1-0 fastball into the right-center-field seats.

The Red Sox scored three times in the fourth, capitalizing on Tanaka's location struggles and shoddy New York defense.

After designated hitter David Ortiz moved to third on two wild pitches and scored on Ramirez's sacrifice fly, the Yankees did not complete an inning-ending double-play on right fielder Shane Victorino's ground ball. Drew was charged with an error when shortstop Didi Gregorius dropped the throw and Bogaerts followed with a two-run double.

The Yankees added three more runs in the bottom half on a two-run single by Gardner and a sacrifice fly by Teixeira that knocked out Buchholz.

Boston got a run back in the fifth on Ramirez's third home run.
