Mariners 11, Blue Jays 1: Robinson Cano homered and had an RBI double during a seven-run sixth inning to back seven dominant innings from Felix Hernandez as host Seattle claimed the opener of the three-game series.

Hernandez (13-3) struck out eight and allowed one run on three hits to lower his AL-best ERA to 1.95 and extend his own major-league record with his 16th consecutive start with at least seven innings and two runs or fewer allowed. Mike Zunino, Dustin Ackley and Brad Miller drove in two runs apiece for the Mariners, who closed within one game of Detroit for the second wild card.

Jose Bautista swatted his 23rd homer and Colby Rasmus collected a pair of hits for weary Toronto, which needed 19 innings to outlast Detroit on Sunday. Drew Hutchison (8-10) unraveled in the decisive sixth and was charged with six runs on seven hits in 5 2/3 innings.

Bautista's two-out blast in the fourth staked the Blue Jays to a 1-0 lead, but Seattle answered with two in the bottom of the frame on Kyle Seager's sacrifice fly and Zunino's RBI single. The Mariners erupted in the sixth and chased Hutchison with Cano's homer, Zunino's RBI triple and Endy Chavez's run-scoring double for a 5-1 edge.

Miller greeted reliever Brad Mills with an RBI triple and Ackley singled home a pair before Cano capped the uprising with a run-scoring double to make it 9-1 and drop Toronto one game behind Seattle.

GAME NOTEBOOK: Hernandez, who evened his record at 5-5 against Toronto, surrendered only his seventh homer in 25 starts. ... Blue Jays LF Melky Cabrera, who reached base eight times in Sunday's 19-inning win, was hitless in four at-bats. ... The Mariners recalled OF James Jones from Triple-A Tacoma and sent down RHP Erasmo Ramirez, who started Sunday's game against the Chicago White Sox.
