Mariners 12, Rays 5:
Stefen Romero went 3-for-5 with a homer and three RBIs, Mike Zunino and Justin Smoak also homered and Felix Hernandez won for the first time since April 11 as host Seattle recorded a season best for runs while rolling past Tampa Bay.

James Jones scored three runs while Smoak, Robinson Cano and Corey Hart had two RBIs apiece as the Mariners built a nine-run lead while handing the Rays their sixth loss in seven games. Hernandez (4-1) struck out seven and was charged with four runs and eight hits in 6 2/3 innings.

Hernandez was one out away from tossing seven shutout innings until Ryan Hanigan smacked a three-run double into the left-center field gap to end his night. David DeJesus followed with a run-scoring double off Tom Wilhelmsen before Seattle’s 14-hit offensive explosion was capped in the eighth by Romero’s solo blast off the second-deck façade in left and Smoak’s two-run opposite-field shot to left prior to Hanigan recording his fourth RBI of the contest with a single in the ninth.

Romero stroked a run-scoring single in the first inning off Cesar Ramos (1-2) and Cano and Hart followed by slamming run-scoring hits off the top of the fence as Seattle scored three in the frame. Both drives were reviewed and Cano’s hit was ruled a double while Hart was given a single as he was thrown out at second during the confusion on whether or not his drive had cleared the wall.

The Mariners took advantage of three Tampa Bay errors during a five-run second inning that began with Zunino’s homer and included a run-scoring double by Romero and Kyle Seager’s RBI single. Hart delivered a single to deep right in the third to make it 9-0.

GAME NOTEBOOK:
Ramos gave up nine runs (five earned) and 11 hits in 6 2/3 innings. … Hernandez was ejected by home-plate umpire Mark Ripperger upon being pulled by manager Lloyd McClendon as he aired his displeasure with a ball call that preceded Hanigan’s bases-clearing double. … Tampa Bay committed four errors in the first two innings while digging its huge deficit.
