Phillies 2, Nationals 1: Roberto Hernandez matched his season high by working eight innings in which he allowed just one unearned run as visiting Philadelphia topped Washington for the second straight night.

Marlon Byrd homered and Grady Sizemore added two more hits for Philadelphia, pushing the veteran outfielder's batting average to .344 since joining the club on July 11. Hernandez (6-8) gave up five hits and a walk while striking out three before Jonathan Papelbon survived some tense moments in the ninth.

Ian Desmond drove in the lone run for the Nationals, who have dropped four of their last five games but remained 1 1/2 games ahead of Atlanta in the National League East. Doug Fister (10-3) was charged with two runs and six hits in seven innings, snapping his personal five-game winning streak.

Byrd lifted his 21st home run of the season over the right-center field wall in the sixth, snapping a 1-1 tie. Hernandez took over from there, retiring the side in order in the sixth, seventh and eighth before Papelbon struck out the final two hitters with runners on first and second to wrap up his 26th save.

Cody Asche gave Philadelphia a 1-0 lead in the second inning, driving home Sizemore to cap a two-out rally by the visitors. However, Asche's throwing error in the bottom of the frame contributed to Washington tying the score on Desmond's single that plated Adam LaRoche.
