Yankees 5, Rays 4: Chris Young hit a walk-off, three-run homer as New York exploded for five runs in the final two innings to stun visiting Tampa Bay in the rubber match of their three-game series.

Alex Cobb took a no-hitter into the eighth inning for Tampa Bay, but Brad Boxberger came on and surrendered a two-run homer by pinch-hitter Martin Prado that cut New York's deficit to 4-2. The Rays went to closer Jake McGee (4-2) in the ninth and he put the first two on with a hit batsman and a double before notching a strikeout, but Young ripped a high fastball into the stands in left field for the winning blast.

Young broke up the no-hit bid with a double to right-center in the eighth for the Yankees, who drew within four games of Detroit for the second American League wild card. Shawn Kelley (3-5) notched the win in relief while Cobb, who was charged with one run on one hit and two walks in 7 1/3 frames, settled for a no-decision despite yielding two or fewer earned runs for the 12th straight start.

Yunel Escobar homered twice for Tampa Bay, getting hold of a hanging slider in the fourth inning and sending it into the second row in left for a 3-0 lead. Escobar led off the seventh and got another slider spinning over the middle from Michael Pineda that he lifted out to left-center for his sixth blast.

New York put its first runner on in the third when Kevin Kiermaier dropped a fly ball in center field and got two on when Cobb temporarily lost the strike zone with one out in the seventh. Cobb left after Young’s double and Boxberger surrendered Prado’s shot in the eighth before McGee melted down in the ninth.

GAME NOTEBOOK: Yankees 3B Chase Headley was hit in the face by a pitch from McGee leading off the ninth and had a gash on his chin but walked off under his own power while being replaced by a pinch-runner. … Pineda was charged with four runs and 10 hits in 7 1/3 innings, marking the first time in 10 starts he allowed more than two earned runs. … Tampa Bay gets another chance to take a series from an AL East wild-card contender when it visits Toronto on Friday, while New York heads to Baltimore for a four-game series.
