Angels 5, Rays 3: All-Star Mike Trout hit a two-run homer and Josh Hamilton added a solo shot as visiting Los Angeles took the opener of the three-game series.

Chris Iannetta and Erick Aybar each drove in a run for the Angels, who improved to 2-2 on their eight-game road trip and climbed within one game of first-place Oakland in the American League West. Matt Shoemaker (9-3) allowed three runs - two earned - and eight hits in five innings and three relievers bridged the gap to Huston Street, who worked out of a bases-loaded jam in the ninth for his 29th save of the season and fifth with Los Angeles.

Evan Longoria and Cole Figueroa each recorded two hits and an RBI for the Rays, who are six games out of a wild-card spot. Jeremy Hellickson (0-1) surrendered four runs on six hits and two walks in 4 2/3 frames.

Los Angeles jumped out to an early lead as Trout belted a two-run homer on Hellickson's eighth pitch and Aybar delivered an RBI single later in the first. Tampa Bay got on the board in the second on Figueroa's sacrifice fly before Hamilton launched a two-out solo shot in the third to restore the three-run advantage.

The Rays got within 4-3 in the fifth as Ben Zobrist scored on Longoria's infield single and Matt Joyce came home on Angels third baseman David Freese's throwing error. But Los Angeles got an insurance run in the sixth as Iannetta plated J.B. Shuck with a double.

GAME NOTEBOOK: Tampa Bay 1B James Loney hit a leadoff double in the second inning to extend his streak of reaching safely to 20 games. ... Tampa Bay lost for just the third time in 12 games since the All-Star break. ... Street loaded the bases on two hits and a walk before striking out two batters and inducing a game-ending flyout.
