Athletics 3, Angels 2: John Jaso belted a two-run, pinch-hit homer in the top of the ninth inning as visiting Oakland rallied to edge Los Angeles in the opener of a three-game series.

Josh Donaldson singled to open the ninth for his second hit and trotted home when Jaso hammered a 1-2 pitch from Ernesto Frieri (0-1) over the right-field wall for his first of the season. Yoenis Cespedes slammed his third home run, Alberto Callaspo had three hits and Jim Johnson (1-2) got the win after pitching a scoreless eighth for the Athletics.

Albert Pujols belted his 496th career homer and added an RBI single to extend his hitting streak to 10 games while Kole Calhoun had a pair of hits for the Angels. Luke Gregerson came on in the ninth to get Los Angeles in order for his second save as Oakland won for the seventh time in eight games.

Calhoun singled to lead off the first inning for the Angels, moved to second on a passed ball and scored on Pujols’ single to center field. Pujols hammered a 1-0 pitch over the center-field wall for a 2-0 lead in the third and Cespedes answered with his blast into the right-center field seats in the fourth.

Oakland starter Jesse Chavez produced his third straight solid start without a reward, yielding two runs (one earned) and four hits over seven innings and matching his career high of nine strikeouts. Hector Santiago allowed only one run on five hits while striking out three in the first seven innings for the Angels.

GAME NOTEBOOK: Oakland has won 14 of its last 20 games at Angel Stadium. … Oakland CF Coco Crisp sat out Monday with a sore hamstring, but reportedly took batting practice and could return Tuesday. OF Craig Gentry took his place in the lineup and went 1-for-3. … Angels OF Mike Trout was 0-for-4 after going 7-for-15 in the last series against the New York Mets.
