Mariners 4, Astros 1: Brad Miller had an RBI single in the sixth inning before ripping a two-run triple to snap a tie in the eighth as host Seattle won the opener of the three-game series.

With the score tied at 1-1, Michael Foltynewicz (0-1) replaced Kevin Chapman with one out in the eighth and promptly walked Mike Zunino. James Jones entered as a pinch runner and Michael Saunders was also issued a free pass before Miller sent a 2-1 fastball from Tony Sipp to the wall in right field to plate both runners.

Austin Jackson scored Miller with an RBI single up the middle to claim a 4-1 lead for the Mariners, who have won six of their last seven to remain a half-game ahead of Detroit for the second wild card in the American League. Danny Farquhar (3-1) secured the victory after a scoreless inning and Fernando Rodney retired the side in the ninth for his 44th save.

Robbie Grossman tripled among his three hits and scored on Jose Altuve's sacrifice fly in the seventh inning for the Astros, who have dropped eight of their last 10 against the Mariners. Altuve went 0-for-3 to see his career-high 14-game hitting streak come to a halt.

Miller snapped a scoreless tie in the sixth inning after sending a first-pitch fastball from Jorge De Leon up the middle to plate Logan Morrison. Houston answered in the following frame as Altuve's sacrifice fly to right was deep enough to score Grossman.

GAME NOTEBOOK: Seattle manager Lloyd McClendon was ejected by crew chief Jeff Nelson after arguing that Grossman should have been credited with a double in the seventh after the ball deflected off RF Saunders. The ejection was McClendon's sixth of the season. ... Mariners RHP Felix Hernandez scattered five hits and struck out eight over six scoreless innings before settling for a no-decision. ... Houston RHP Brad Peacock allowed four hits and struck out six over five scoreless innings to settle for a no-decision.
