Chris Carter hit two homers and Collin McHugh outpitched Jered Weaver as host Houston swept the two-game series from Los Angeles.

Carter had three RBIs on his homers and Jason Castro added an RBI single as the Astros won their second consecutive game under interim manager Tom Lawless and fourth straight overall. The Angels remained 4 1/2 games ahead of Oakland in the American League West.

McHugh (8-9) struck out eight and gave up one run and four hits in 7 2/3 innings while winning his fourth consecutive decision. Weaver (15-8) gave up two runs and five hits in six-plus innings.

Carter homered to left in the second to put Houston on the board. The Angels tied the game in the third on two singles and an error by Houston shortstop Jonathan Villar.

Dexter Fowler drew a one-out walk in the fourth and stole second with two out and Castro followed with a single to right to score Fowler and put the Astros ahead 2-1. Carter hit his 35th homer of the season in the eighth to make it a three-run margin and Chad Qualls worked a perfect ninth for his 17th save.

GAME NOTEBOOK: Angels SS Erick Aybar was hitless in three at-bats to halt a 17-game hitting streak. … Houston 2B Jose Altuve, who leads the majors with a .340 average, lined a double in the ninth to extend his hitting streak to 11 games. … Los Angeles RF Kole Calhoun had two of his team’s four hits.
