Astros 3, Blue Jays 1:
Gregorio Petit snapped a tie with his first major-league home run in the eighth inning as Houston edged visiting Toronto.

Petit led off the eighth against Aaron Loup (3-3) and drove a first-pitch fastball out to left to put the Astros on top. Jose Altuve followed with a ground-rule-double, stole third and scored on Robbie Grossman’s sacrifice fly to help make a winner out of Jose Veras (1-0) in relief before Chad Qualls worked the ninth for his 12th save.

J.A. Happ allowed one run and three hits in seven innings before handing it off to Loup as the Blue Jays had a six-game winning streak come to an end and dropped 2 1/2 games behind first-place Baltimore in the American League East. Dioner Navarro drove in the run and Danny Valencia doubled for Toronto.

The Blue Jays jumped on top in the first inning when Melky Cabrera singled, moved to third on Jose Bautista’s single and scored on Navarro’s sacrifice fly. Toronto put the first two on in the second but failed to score before Houston starter Collin McHugh settled in and ended up allowing one run and five hits in 6 1/3 innings.

The Astros drew even in the fourth inning when Chris Carter reached on a two-out infield single and moved to second on Matt Dominguez’s walk. Jesus Guzman followed and blooped a single to center to plate Carter.

GAME NOTEBOOK: Guzman (back spasms) left the game in the fifth and was replaced by Jon Singleton. … CF Jake Marisnick made his debut for the Astros after being acquired in a six-player deal with Miami on Thursday and went 0-for-3. … Toronto 3B Brett Lawrie (fractured finger) began a rehab assignment at Single-A Dunedin and went 1-for-3 while starting at second base.
