Padres 6, Tigers 0: Andrew Cashner pitched a one-hitter and Chase Headley homered as San Diego rolled past visiting Detroit in the opener of the three-game series.

Cashner (1-1) took a no-hitter into the sixth inning and finished with a career-high 11 strikeouts and walked two. Headley broke out of a 4-for-32 season-opening slump with an RBI double in the first inning and a two-run shot in the sixth off Rick Porcello (1-1), who allowed five runs on 10 hits over 6 1/3 innings.

San Diego, which scored a total of 20 runs in its first nine games, grabbed an early lead in the second when Everth Cabrera hit a leadoff single and came around to score on Jedd Gyorko’s two-out triple. Headley followed with his first extra-base hit of the season, a run-scoring double to center.

Detroit, which homered in each of its first seven games, failed to generate any offense against Cashner and lost for the third time in its last four games. Cashner retired 14 in a row before Rajai Davis lined a single into right-center field with one out in the sixth.

Davis stole second and third base and Ian Kinsler drew a one-out walk before Cashner extinguished the Tigers’ threat by inducing a double play grounder by Miguel Cabrera. The Padres extended their lead in the bottom half on Headley’s two-run homer and added two more runs in the seventh.

GAME NOTEBOOK: Tigers OF Torii Hunter missed his second straight game with a bruised left knee but was available to pinch-hit. … The Padres, who began playing in 1969, remain the only major league franchise without a no-hitter. Cashner threw a one-hitter against Pittsburgh on Sept. 16, 2013. … Davis has stolen a base in four consecutive games for the Tigers, who were shutout for the first time this season.
