Cubs 17, Cardinals 5: Junior Lake homered and knocked in a career-high six runs and Mike Olt also went deep as visiting Chicago belted a season-high 20 hits to claim the opener of its four-game series with St. Louis.

Emilio Bonifacio went 4-for-5 and scored five runs, Darwin Barney was 3-for-5 and Starlin Castro added three hits and three RBIs as the Cubs won for only the second time in nine games. Travis Wood (3-4) benefited from the offensive outburst, winning despite allowing five runs - four earned - on five hits while walking three and hitting two batters over six frames.

Tyler Lyons (0-3) was tagged for nine runs and nine hits in four innings as St. Louis allowed season highs for runs and hits. Yadier Molina went 2-for-3 with an RBI to pace St. Louis' offense.

The Cubs jumped on Lyons early as Olt's team-leading eighth home run - and fourth in six games - capped a four-run first inning and Lake followed with a three-run shot a frame later to make it 7-0. Lake's error in left field helped the Cardinals plate two runs in the second, but Chicago got them back in the third as Lake doubled home a run and Bonifacio slid around Molina's tag to score on Anthony Rizzo's grounder.

The Cardinals got to Wood for a three-run fifth inning, but the Cubs answered again in the sixth as Wood was hit by a pitch and scored on Rizzo's sacrifice fly before Castro doubled in a run. Lake dumped a two-run double down the line before Rizzo and Castro each added his third RBI of the night during the six-run ninth.

GAME NOTEBOOK: The Cubs' 17 runs are their most in St. Louis since a 19-4 win on Sept. 21, 1974. The run total was the highest the Cardinals have allowed since Aug. 3, 2010 versus Houston. … Bonificio initially was ruled out at the plate on Rizzo's fielder's choice in the fourth, but Cubs manager Rick Renteria challenged the play and the call was overturned. … Cardinals INF Daniel Descalso made his first professional pitching appearance with two outs in the ninth and needed only two pitches to get Olt to fly out to left for the final out.
