Braves 5, Marlins 2: Justin Upton continued his hot August with a homer and three RBIs as host Atlanta won for the 10th time in 14 games.

Upton – who has seven homers and 28 RBIs this month – finished 2-for-4 as the Braves moved within one game of St. Louis for the final National League wild-card spot and within six of NL East leader Washington. Jason Heyward added two hits and an RBI, David Carpenter (5-3) benefited from a three-run seventh by the offense and Craig Kimbrel pitched the ninth for his 40th save.

Pinch-hitter Jordany Valdespin hit a game-tying homer in the seventh inning off Carpenter and Marcell Ozuna finished 3-for-4 with an RBI for Miami. Chris Hatcher (0-2) gave up two runs on two hits without retiring a batter in the seventh.

After Valdespin's homer slid just above the left-field fence with one out in the seventh to even the score at 2-2, Andrelton Simmons led off the bottom of the inning with a bunt single and scored on Heyward’s opposite-field base hit to left with one out. Upton’s RBI single to center drove home Heyward and, when Ozuna overran the ball, Emilio Bonifacio raced home to make it 5-2.

The Marlins broke a scoreless tie in the sixth, when Ozuna followed singles by Casey McGehee and Garrett Jones by slicing one of his own just inside the right-field line, scoring McGehee before Jones was thrown out at the plate. The Braves answered immediately as Freddie Freeman walked before Upton smashed a 1-1 fastball from Miami starter Tom Koehler deep into the center-field seats for his 26th homer and a 2-1 lead.

GAME NOTEBOOK: Koehler surrendered two runs on four hits in six innings with six strikeouts, while Atlanta starter Ervin Santana gave up one run on five hits with four walks and seven strikeouts in six frames. … Upton has 91 RBIs on the season, eclipsing his previous career high of 88 set in 2011 for Arizona. … Kimbrel reached 40 saves for the fourth consecutive season and tied Kansas City's Greg Holland for the major-league lead.
