Braves 6, Nationals 3: Justin Upton, Evan Gattis and Freddie Freeman each collected three hits, and host Atlanta scored four runs in the first to beat Washington for the second consecutive night.

Freeman and B.J. Upton each hit a solo home run as the Braves improved to 4-1 against their NL East rivals. Alex Wood (2-1) overcame a leadoff homer from Anthony Rendon, allowing one run on six hits with eight strikeouts in five innings.

Washington starter Taylor Jordan (0-1), who held the Braves to one run in 6 1/3 innings Sunday, gave up five runs on 10 hits in five innings. Rendon and Kevin Frandsen each had two hits for the Nationals, who placed outfielder Denard Span on the disabled list before the game then saw third baseman Ryan Zimmerman leave in the fifth inning with a right thumb injury.

Rendon hit Wood’s sixth pitch of the game over the fence in center, but the Braves answered emphatically in the bottom half of the first with B.J. Upton’s homer to center, Justin Upton’s run-scoring double to left-center, Dan Uggla’s RBI single to left and Gattis’ run-scoring double to left.

Ian Desmond raced home on Anthony Varvaro’s wild pitch in the sixth and scored on Sandy Leon’s single to center in the eighth as the Nationals pulled within 5-3. But David Carpenter, who surrendered Leon’s single, stranded two runners to end the threat before Freeman’s shot over the left-field wall made it 6-3 and Craig Kimbrel pitched the ninth for his fifth save.

GAME NOTEBOOK: Justin Upton is 9-for-11 in his past three games with six runs scored, three homers and six RBIs. … Freeman raised his average to .425 and extended his hitting streak to eight games. … Washington P Blake Treinen pitched two shutout innings of relief in his major-league debut, allowing two hits with one strikeout.
