Angels 4, Red Sox 2: Mike Trout had an RBI double among two hits and scored a run as visiting Los Angeles won the opener of the four-game series.

Albert Pujols had an RBI single and Kole Calhoun added two hits and scored twice to lift the Angels to their fifth win in six contests and move a half-game over idle Oakland atop the American League West. C.J. Wilson (10-8) labored through 5 1/3 innings to win his second straight start, giving up one run on five hits and a season high-tying five walks, and Kevin Jepsen allowed a run in the ninth before securing his first save since Sept. 16, 2012.

Brock Holt had two hits and an RBI and David Ortiz added two hits and was on base four times for Boston, which stranded 12 runners in falling to 3-8 in its last 11 at home. Brandon Workman (1-7) lost his seventh straight decision despite yielding two runs on six hits over seven innings.

Los Angeles broke through against Workman in the third when Trout launched a two-out double off the wall in left-center to plate Calhoun and came around on Pujols' line single down the third-base line. Boston cut the deficit in half in the fourth on a two-out bloop single by Holt, extending his hitting streak to a career-best 12 games.

The Red Sox stranded eight runners through five innings before chasing Wilson and loading the bases in the sixth, but Mike Morin escaped the jam by inducing Dustin Pedroia to hit into an inning-ending groundout. The Angels then broke it open in the eighth, loading the bases before reliever Junichi Tazawa booted a comebacker on a potential double-play grounder and threw wildly past home, allowing two runs to score.

GAME NOTEBOOK: Ortiz collected the 544th double of his career leading off the fifth, moving past Tony Gwynn into 29th place on the all-time list. ... Trout has hit safely in all seven of his games at Fenway Park, going 15-for-32 with five doubles and six RBIs. ... Slumping Angels OF Josh Hamilton, who asked for a day off Sunday, was not in the lineup for the second straight game, while Red Sox CF Jackie Bradley Jr. was demoted to Triple-A Pawtucket and OF Mookie Betts was recalled to take his place.
