Mariners 6, Rays 4: Justin Smoak drilled a tiebreaking two-run double in the eighth inning to lift host Seattle over slumping Tampa Bay in the opener of their three-game series.

Raul Ibanez homered and Kyle Seager drove in a pair of runs for the Mariners, who capitalized on a dropped fly ball by center fielder Desmond Jennings for a two-base error with one out in the eighth to ignite the winning rally and send the Rays to their seventh loss in nine games.

Carter Capps (3-3) notched the win despite giving up the tying run in the top of the eighth and Danny Farquhar finished up for his 13th save. Joel Peralta (2-6) took the loss when Smoak's fly ball down the right-field line barely eluded a diving Wil Myers.

Delmon Young homered and Jose Molina had a pair of hits - including an RBI single - for Tampa Bay, which saw its lead over Baltimore and Cleveland for the second American League wild card sliced to two games.

The Mariners went ahead in the third on RBI singles by Franklin Gutierrez and Seager before Ibanez's homer in the fourth made it 4-2, but the Rays got back within one on Molina's RBI single in the sixth. Tampa Bay pulled even in the eighth, when pinch hitter Luke Scott drilled a double into the gap in left-center to plate Myers.

GAME NOTEBOOK: Seattle's Hisashi Iwakuma gave up three runs on eight hits in 5 2/3 innings, while counterpart Alex Cobb allowed four runs on seven hits over six innings. ... Ibanez's 27th homer leaves him two shy of the major-league record for players 41 and over set by Boston Red Sox legend Ted Williams. ... Young, who started his career with Tampa Bay in 2006, had two hits and is 5-for-13 in four games with the Rays.
