Padres 3, Mariners 2 (10): Will Venable singled with the bases loaded and none out in the bottom of the 10th inning to lift San Diego over Seattle.
Chris Denorfia reached on an infield single to start the 10th against Yoervis Medina (1-1) and advanced to third on Everth Cabrera’s hit-and-run single. Chase Headley was intentionally walked before Venable’s hard-hit ball caromed off the glove of Seattle first baseman Kendrys Morales to score Denorfia.
Jason Bay hit a line-drive homer to lead off the top of the ninth to give Seattle a 2-1 lead. San Diego tied the contest in the bottom of the inning on a bases-loaded sacrifice fly by Kyle Blanks and Luke Gregerson (3-2) pitched a perfect 10th prior to the Padres pushing across the winning run.
Both starting pitchers were superb. San Diego’s Eric Stults struck out a career-best 12 in eight innings while allowing one run, three hits and no walks, and Seattle’s Joe Saunders gave up one run, four hits and no walks in seven innings.
The Padres struck first on Headley’s two-out, second-deck homer to left in the first inning. The Mariners tied the score in the fourth when Endy Chavez singled with one out, moved to third on Kyle Seager’s double and scored on a grounder by Morales.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Seattle demoted struggling RHP Brandon Maurer to Triple-A Tacoma and recalled 3B Alex Liddi. … Stults had 198 career strikeouts entering the game in 71 major-league appearances, including 49 starts. … Mariners OF Michael Morse (quadriceps) will be sidelined about three to five more days. He was injured while running the bases in Tuesday’s game against the Padres.
