Phillies 5, Nationals 4: Carlos Ruiz hit a three-run double and John Mayberry Jr. homered as visiting Philadelphia held on to snap Washington's seven-game winning streak.

Cole Hamels (8-13) allowed four runs - three earned - and eight hits in six-plus innings to win his fourth straight decision and move within one victory of 100 for his career. He nearly lost all of a four-run lead in the seventh before the bullpen closed the door, with Jonathan Papelbon working around a leadoff double in the ninth for his 27th save.

Gio Gonzalez (10-7) gave up four runs and nine hits in six frames as Washington fell 5 1/2 games behind Cincinnati in its pursuit of the second wild-card spot in the National League. Denard Span went 3-for-5 to extend his hitting streak to 25 games and scored twice.

Span led off the bottom of the first inning with a single and scored on former Phillie Jayson Werth's sacrifice fly. Washington maintained its 1-0 advantage until Mayberry took Gonzalez deep with one out in the fifth.

Hamels followed with his 10th hit of the year and the Phillies loaded the bases with two outs before Ruiz cleared them with a double to right. Chase Utley's RBI single in the seventh made it 5-1, a large-enough cushion for Philadelphia to survive the Nationals' three-run rally in the bottom half.

GAME NOTEBOOK: The Phillies have won each of Hamels' last seven starts. ... Ruiz is 14-for-24 with runners in scoring position since Aug. 8. ... Philadelphia RHP Tyler Cloyd opposes Washington RHP Jordan Zimmermann in the series finale Sunday afternoon.
