Blue Jays 7, Yankees 2: Edwin Encarnacion homered and Todd Redmond pitched effectively into the sixth inning as host Toronto dealt New York a setback in its chase for an American League wild-card spot.
Redmond (2-2) limited New York to two runs on three hits while fanning seven over 5 2/3 innings as Toronto beat New York for just the third time in 16 meetings. Brett Lawrie went 2-for-4 with two RBIs while rookie Ryan Goins added two hits and scored twice.
Hiroki Kuroda (11-10) endured his third straight rough outing and was charged with seven runs - five earned - on nine hits over five innings. The loss dropped the Yankees 5 1/2 games behind Oakland for the second AL wild-card berth.
Toronto erupted for four runs in the first inning on Lawrie's two-run double to the center-field wall and catcher Chris Stewart's two-run error on J.P. Arencibia's strikeout. Encarnacion extended the advantage in the second with a two-run blast that barely cleared the wall in left.
The Blue Jays made it 7-0 on Jose Reyes' sacrifice fly before New York finally answered with two in the fourth on Alex Rodriguez's RBI single and Mark Reynolds' run-scoring double.
GAME NOTEBOOK: With New York 2B Robinson Cano sitting out after being hit in the left hand by a pitch Tuesday night, Reynolds made his first career start at second base. ... Kuroda has allowed 19 runs over his last three starts spanning 16 2/3 innings. ... The teams meet for the final time Sept. 17-19 in Toronto.
