Athletics 3, Yankees 2 (18): Nate Freiman's RBI single plated John Jaso in the 18th inning and Jesse Chavez sparkled in long relief as Oakland extended its home winning streak to 11 contests with a three-game sweep of New York.
Coco Crisp's pinch-hit single nearly ended the wild contest in the 15th inning, but Yankees left fielder Vernon Wells threw out Brandon Moss at the plate. The Athletics persevered three innings later as Jaso hit a one-out single off Preston Claiborne (0-1) and advanced to third base on Seth Smith's blooper to shallow left. Mariano Rivera intentionally walked Jed Lowrie to get to Freiman, who lined a single to left to end the game in 5 hours, 35 minutes.
Smith had an RBI double off the right-field wall in the third inning for the Athletics, who played their longest game since April 29, when they recorded a 10-8 victory in 19 innings over the Los Angeles Angels.
Robinson Cano belted a two-run homer in the first inning and matched Ichiro Suzuki with three hits for the Yankees. New York received some good news as captain Derek Jeter was cleared to start running and take part in baseball activities. The 13-time All-Star has not played this season as he works his way back after breaking his left ankle in the playoffs in 2012.
Chavez (1-0) allowed just one hit and struck out seven in 5 2/3 innings of brilliant relief to hand the Yankees their seventh straight loss in Oakland.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Cano opened the scoring in the first inning after depositing a fastball from RHP Jarrod Parker over the wall in right-center field for his 16th homer. The blast was the 193rd for Cano, who moved past Tino Martinez for sole possession of 16th place in franchise history. ... Oakland forged a 2-2 tie in the third following C Derek Norris' RBI groundout and Smith's double, which plated Jaso after C Chris Stewart tagged him with his glove as the ball remained in his bare hand. ... New York starting RHP Hiroki Kuroda retired the final 16 batters he faced before exiting after eight innings. ... The Athletics presented retiring Rivera with a surf board and a bottle of Napa Valley white wine prior to the game.
