Cardinals 4, Brewers 2: Jon Jay and David Freese each had two hits and an RBI and rookie John Gast pitched effectively into the sixth to help host St. Louis claim the rubber match of the three-game series.
The Cardinals beat former teammate Kyle Lohse (1-5) for the third time this season, touching him up for four runs on eight hits over six innings. Lohse has dropped four straight decisions.
Gast (2-0) has won each of his first two major-league starts after limiting the Brewers to two runs on four hits over 5 1/3 innings. Edward Mujica pitched a perfect ninth for his 13th save.
Both runs scored after Gast exited, as Yuniesky Betancourt and Jeff Bianchi notched consecutive RBI singles against reliever Seth Maness. The Brewers loaded the bases with no outs in the seventh, but Maness got Jean Segura to pop out to first and induced a double-play ball from Ryan Braun to get out of the jam.
Six of the Cardinals' nine hits came in the four-run fourth inning, including five straight with one out.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Milwaukee dropped to 0-17 when scoring four runs or fewer. … Segura went 2-for-4 for his 20th multi-hit game, the most in the National League. … Lohse has lost to rookie starting pitchers in all three of his starts against the Cardinals. He was outdueled by Shelby Miller in his first two outings against St. Louis.
