Angels 6, Mariners 5:
Grant Green hit a three-run double and Collin Cowgill capped a big game with a steal of home as Los Angeles held on to defeat Seattle at home for the seventh time in eight attempts this season.

Cowgill homered, tripled and scored three runs as the red-hot Angels (76-78) won for the 21st time in 28 contests to pull within two games of .500. The sinking Mariners lost for the 11th time in 13 contests and are 2-7 on a 10-game road trip that concludes Sunday.

Jerome Williams (9-10) allowed one run and five hits in 5 2/3 innings to win his fourth consecutive start. Seattle’s Raul Ibanez hit his 29th homer of the season in the ninth to tie Ted Williams (1960) for most homers by a 41-year-old before Ernesto Frieri recorded the final two outs for his 36th save in 40 opportunities.

Green hit his bases-clearing double down the left-field line in the second inning off Joe Saunders (11-16) and scored on Andrew Romine’s single to right. Cowgill’s fourth-inning homer gave the Angels a 5-1 lead, and he was credited with a steal of home in the seventh when he charged down the line on a squeeze play as Saunders’ pitch sailed wide and went to the backstop.

Dustin Ackley had a run-scoring single in the eighth and Abraham Almonte hit a sacrifice fly to pull Seattle within 6-4 before Ibanez hit his 300th career blast in the ninth.

GAME NOTEBOOK: Saunders matched a career high with nine strikeouts in seven innings but allowed six runs and six hits to lose for the sixth time in seven decisions. … Cowgill’s steal of home was the first by the Angels since SS Erick Aybar accomplished the feat against Toronto on Sept. 20, 2011. … Mariners SS Brad Miller (hamstring) missed his seventh straight start but singled and scored as a pinch hitter in the eighth.
