Mets 4, Marlins 3: Marlon Byrd’s single just inside the third-base bag in the bottom of the ninth inning scored two runs as New York came from behind to win the rubber game of the series against visiting Miami.

Ruben Tejada was hit by a pitch by closer Steve Cishek (0-1) and moved to third on a pinch-hit single by Kirk Nieuwenhuis to set up Byrd’s winner. Daniel Murphy had two hits, including his second homer of the series, and reliever Scott Rice (1-0) pitched a scoreless ninth for his first career victory.

The comeback spoiled the debut of 20-year-old Marlins pitcher Jose Fernandez, who retired the first 10 batters he faced before giving up one run on three hits and striking out eight. Donovan Solano recorded three hits and an RBI while Justin Ruggiano and Chris Valaika each had a pair of hits and an RBI for Miami.

Miami left a pair of runners on in the first two innings before taking a 1-0 lead in the third on Ruggiano’s two-out RBI double. Valaika doubled home the second run in the fourth and later scored on Solano’s two-base hit for a 3-0 lead.

Anthony Recker’s RBI double knocked in the only run off Fernandez in the fifth and Murphy’s homer to deep center field pulled the Mets within 3-2 in the sixth.

GAME NOTEBOOK: Fernandez, the youngest pitcher to ever appear in a game for the Marlins, set the franchise record for strikeouts in a major league debut and matched the mark for the most strikeouts in a major league debut against the Mets. … New York has homered at least once in each of the first six games of a season for the first time since 1987. … Mets starter Aaron Laffey allowed 10 hits and three runs in 4 1/3 innings and became the 115th player to appear in a game for both the Mets and the cross-city rival Yankees.
