Giants 4, Dodgers 3: Pinch hitter Brett Pill belted a tiebreaking home run in the eighth inning and Hunter Pence capped a torrid series with two blasts as visiting San Francisco edged Los Angeles.

Pill’s leadoff shot off Paco Rodriguez (3-3) was overshadowed by another impressive performance by Pence, who went 8-for-17 with four homers and 12 RBIs during the four-game series. Jean Machi (3-1) worked a scoreless inning in relief for the win and Sergio Romo retired pinch hitter Yasiel Puig with the bases loaded and two outs in the ninth for his 35th save.

Pence gave the Giants an early lead when he opened the second with a home run off Edinson Volquez, who yielded three runs over 5 2/3 innings. Adrian Gonzalez answered with a three-run double in the fifth for the Dodgers, whose magic number to clinch the National League West remained at four with 13 games to play.

Brandon Belt singled with two outs in the sixth and scored when Pence deposited his second home run of the game into the bullpen in left field. Pence had a homer and seven RBIs in a 19-3 win over Los Angeles on Saturday, when the Giants set a Dodger Stadium record for runs scored.

Mark Ellis and Dee Gordon had two hits apiece for the Dodgers, who played without shortstop Hanley Ramirez (back) and outfielders Andre Ethier (ankle) and Carl Crawford (back). Los Angeles, which has lost four of its last five contests, begins a 10-game road trip in Arizona on Monday.

GAME NOTEBOOK: Giants 2B Marco Scutaro left the game in the third inning with lower back tightness. … The 12 RBIs by Pence is the most in any single series against the Dodgers since Ripper Collins accomplished the feat in 1935. … Giants starter Ryan Vogelsong surrendered three runs over six frames.
