Indians 5, Mariners 4: Mark Reynolds drove in three runs – including a walk-off fielder's choice grounder – as host Cleveland won in its final at-bat for the second straight game.
Closer Chris Perez (2-0) allowed Seattle to tie the game in the top half of the ninth on back-to-back homers. But Jason Kipnis, who delivered a walk-off three-run homer in Friday’s 10-inning, series-opening win, opened the bottom of the ninth with a single off Oliver Perez (1-1) and Asdrubal Cabrera followed with a double.
Following a walk to Nick Swisher that loaded the bases, Reynolds grounded to shortstop Brendan Ryan. Kipnis beat the throw to home when catcher Jesus Montero lifted his foot off home plate.
Reynolds staked Cleveland to an early advantage when he followed a two-out single from Cabrera and walk to Swisher with a sharp liner to right off Seattle starter Joe Saunders. The game remained 1-0 until the fifth, when Reynolds connected on a 3-2 changeup for his 12th homer, tying him for the American League lead.
Kipnis’ bloop to shallow left chased Saunders in the next inning, but Ryan cut the deficit to 4-2 with his first home run of the season in the eighth. Raul Ibanez and Justin Smoak went back-to-back against Perez in the ninth to tie it.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Cleveland improved to 22-0 in games in which it was tied or held the lead after six innings. … The 40-year-old Ibanez, who finished 1-for-4, has homered six times and driven in 14 runs over his last seven games. … The back-to-back homers were the first for Seattle in the ninth inning or later since July 19, 2004, when Miguel Olivo and Edgar Martinez turned the trick against Boston Red Sox reliever Keith Foulke.
