Luis Valbuena and Brian Bogusevic also homered while Logan Watkins and Anthony Rizzo each recorded three hits for the Cubs, who snapped a five-game losing streak. Arrieta (3-2) allowed one run and three hits while striking out five before Pedro Strop and Kevin Gregg pitched scoreless innings to seal it.

Carlos Gomez hit a solo homer in the seventh for the Brewers, who won the season series 13-6 despite seeing their four-game win streak end. Milwaukee starter Kyle Lohse (10-10) yielded three runs and seven hits over five innings to suffer the loss.

Valbuena hit a 1-1 pitch from Lohse into the right-field seats to give the Cubs the lead two batters into the game. After a one-out single by Rizzo in the third, Schierholtz hammered his first homer since Aug. 30 to right-center as Chicago extended its advantage.

Arrieta did not give up a hit until two were out in the fourth when Aramis Ramirez grounded a single to left. Junior Lake collected his second hit and scored an unearned run on Arrieta’s sacrifice bunt in the sixth for the Cubs, who won for only the fifth time in the last 27 games at Milwaukee.

Boscan replaced him behind the plate. … Brewers SS Jean Segura, the National League’s leader in stolen bases with 44, was held out of the lineup after leaving Wednesday’s game with a right hamstring injury. … Milwaukee begins its last home series of the season against St. Louis while the Cubs start their final homestand against Atlanta on Friday.
