Yankees 5, Orioles 4: Robinson Cano belted a tiebreaking homer to lead off the ninth inning as visiting New York moved ahead of Baltimore and into third place in the American League wild-card chase.

Curtis Granderson and Alex Rodriguez also homered as the Yankees erased an early deficit for the second straight night to climb one-half game ahead of the Orioles and within one of Tampa Bay for the second wild card. Granderson also tripled in the ninth and scored an insurance run on Lyle Overbay's infield single.

David Robertson (5-1) pitched a scoreless eighth for the win and Mariano Rivera gave up a run in the ninth before securing his 43rd save. Tommy Hunter (4-4) took the loss after surrendering Cano's blast, which was the 204th of his career - moving him past Roger Maris for 14th place on the franchise list - and gave him his third career 100-RBI season.

Chris Davis delivered a two-run double in the third inning and J.J. Hardy added an RBI two-base hit in the fourth for a 3-1 lead. The Yankees tied it on solo homers by Granderson in the fifth, which landed on Eutaw Street, and Rodriguez in the sixth - his 653rd blast to put him within seven of tying Willie Mays for fourth on the all-time list.

Yankees starter Andy Pettitte, who has won his last eight decisions versus the Orioles and entered with a 28-6 career record against them, gave up three runs on nine hits in 6 1/3 innings. Scott Feldman went 7 2/3 frames for Baltimore, allowing three runs on only three hits while striking out six and walking two.

GAME NOTEBOOK: Yankees SS Derek Jeter was placed on the 15-day disabled list Wednesday, bringing an end to a season in which he batted .190 and played in only 17 games while trying to return from a fractured ankle. Ironically, the move came on the four-year anniversary of Jeter breaking Lou Gehrig's franchise record for career hits. ... Davis reached a milestone with his two-run double in the third, becoming the first player in franchise history with 40 doubles and 40 homers in the same season. ... Rodriguez was at DH after feeling tightness in his hamstring Tuesday and newly acquired SS Brendan Ryan went 0-for-4 in his Yankees debut. ... Yankees C Austin Romine suffered a slight concussion when he was struck in the mask by a foul tip in Tuesday's game and will be re-evaluated in a few days.
