Red Sox 5, Orioles 4: Mike Carp blasted a two-run homer and Jonny Gomes added a solo shot as visiting Boston bounced back from two straight losses to Baltimore.

John Lackey (4-5) went seven strong innings to halt a three-start winless streak, giving up two runs on seven hits to improve to 12-4 lifetime against the Orioles. He rebounded from a shaky first inning in which he allowed hits to the first four batters and fell behind 2-0,

Stephen Drew added an RBI double for the Red Sox, who won for only the fifth time in 18 meetings against the Orioles and opened a 2 1/2-game lead over Baltimore atop the American League East. Closer Andrew Bailey coughed up a two-run homer to Matt Wieters in the ninth and put the tying run aboard before securing his eighth save on a double-play fly ball.

Manny Machado went 2-for-4 with an RBI double to extend his hitting streak to a career-high 13 games for Baltimore, which saw starter Freddy Garcia (3-4) knocked around for five runs and eight hits in 5 1/3 innings.

Machado doubled home a run and scored on Adam Jones' single for an early 2-0 edge, but Boston went ahead in the fourth on Carp's eighth homer and Drew's run-scoring double to snap an 18-inning scoreless drought. Dustin Pedroia's groundout in the fifth plated a run before Gomes went deep in the sixth off Garcia for a 5-2 lead.

GAME NOTEBOOK: Machado has four straight multiple-hit games to give him a major league-high 28. He also leads the majors in hits (97) and doubles (31). ... Red Sox SS Jose Iglesias extended his hitting streak to a career-best 16 games. ... Red Sox 1B Mike Napoli, who left Thursday's series opener after feeling dizzy and nauseous, flew back to Boston to be examined. RHP Clay Buchholz (neck), who is a perfect 9-0, has been scratched from Tuesday's start and could be headed for a stint on the 15-day disabled list.
