Reds 5, Giants 2: Brandon Phillips homered and drove in three runs and visiting Cincinnati won Game 1 of the National League Division Series despite losing starter Johnny Cueto to injury after one batter.

Cueto exited with back spasms after throwing two pitches to No. 2 batter Marco Scutaro, forcing the Reds to call on reliever Sam LeCure (1-0), who worked 1 2/3 scoreless frames.

Phillips hit a two-run blast in the third and Jay Bruce added a solo shot in the fourth off Matt Cain (0-1), who was pulled for a pinch hitter after throwing just 75 pitches over five innings.

Mat Latos, who was originally scheduled to start Game 3, replaced LeCure and allowed one run over four innings. Sean Marshall and Jonathan Broxton each worked a scoreless inning before Aroldis Chapman allowed a run on a passed ball with the bases loaded in the ninth. Chapman fanned Posey with two runners on to end the game.

With the exception of Buster Posey’s leadoff homer off Latos in the sixth, the Giants were unable to generate much offense in their first postseason game since winning the 2010 World Series.

The Giants, who left 11 runners on base, threatened in the second when they loaded the bases before LeCure retired Cain on a fly ball to right field to end the inning. San Francisco had two on with two outs in the eighth before Broxton struck out Gregor Blanco on a 3-2 pitch.

Cincinnati added two insurance runs in the ninth off Santiago Casilla when Phillips singled in a run with his third hit of the game and Xavier Paul scored on a passed ball.

GAME NOTEBOOK: Cueto’s outing was the shortest in the postseason by a starter since Atlanta's John Thomson lasted one-third of an inning in Game 3 of a 2004 NLDS against Houston. …Two of Cain’s five regular-season losses came against the Reds. …. Bruce improved to 8-for-15 with five doubles and a home run against Cain. … Giants reliever George Kontos tossed two perfect innings in his first postseason appearance. ...The loss snapped the Giants' streak of eight consecutive Game 1 victories in playoff series, beginning in 2000.
