Yankees 4, Blue Jays 2 (Game 1): Andy Pettitte made a strong return from the disabled list and Robinson Cano doubled in a run as host New York took the first game of a doubleheader from Toronto.

Alex Rodriguez and Curtis Granderson each added a first-inning RBI for the Yankees in support of Pettitte (4-3), who had been out since June 27 with a fractured ankle but showed little rust in five scoreless innings. The veteran left-hander allowed four hits while striking out three and walking a pair.

New York did the bulk of its damage in a three-run first inning against Henderson Alvarez (9-13). Cano’s RBI double marked the third straight hit to start the game and Rodriguez followed with an RBI groundout before Granderson plated Cano on a sacrifice fly.

The Blue Jays pushed in a pair of runs against David Robertson in the eighth inning and had the bases loaded when Rafael Soriano got Rajai Davis to line to left field. Ichiro Suzuki made a basket catch, juggling the ball before securing it to hang onto the lead. Suzuki scored an insurance run in the ninth and Soriano worked a scoreless final frame for his 41st save.

GAME NOTEBOOK: Blue Jays INF Omar Vizquel recorded a pair of hits to move past Babe Ruth and into sole possession of 41st place on the all-time list with 2,874.
