Pirates 5, Diamondbacks 4: Andrew McCutchen singled home the go-ahead run with two outs in the top of the ninth, and five Pittsburgh relievers combined to give the visiting Pirates just their second victory in their past eight games.

McCutchen finished 4-for-5 and Garrett Jones went 3-for-4 with a homer and three RBIs for Pittsburgh, which had scored just 12 runs in the first seven games of a nine-game road trip.

After Arizona’s John McDonald hit a solo homer in the eighth to tie the game 4-4, McCutchen drove in Alex Presley on a bloop single to left off Bryan Shaw (0-2).

Jones sparked a rally from a 3-1 deficit in the third. After Neil Walker’s single to center scored McCutchen to bring Pittsburgh within 3-2, Jones’ double to left-center plated Walker to tie the game.

In the sixth, Jones homered to right off Arizona starter Ian Kennedy to give the Pirates a 4-3 advantage.

Pittsburgh starter Jeff Karstens allowed two runs in the first inning before leaving with inflammation in his right shoulder. The Pirates’ bullpen was outstanding, allowing just three hits and one run until McDonald’s solo homer off Jason Grilli (1-1) with one out in the eighth tied the game at 4-4.

Juan Cruz pitched the ninth for his first save.

Arizona center field Chris Young left the game in the fourth inning after slamming hard into the wall in left-center chasing Pedro Alvarez’s fly ball. Young was diagnosed with a right shoulder contusion and was to undergo a MRI on Wednesday.

Game Notebook: The middle of the Pirates lineup – McCutchen, Walker and Jones – finished 10-for-14 with four runs scored and five RBIs. … The Diamondbacks already were short-handed in the outfield before Young's injury. Right fielder Justin Upton did not play due to a jammed thumb that could land the All-Star on the disabled list. … Kennedy is 8-0 in his past 10 starts dating to last season.
