Pirates 4, Brewers 0: Jeff Karstens carried a shutout into the eighth inning and host Pittsburgh scored four unearned runs in the fifth, ending a four-game losing streak.

The Pirates took advantage of Carlos Gomez’s dropped fly ball in the fifth, scoring four times off Shaun Marcum (5-4) to snap the Brewers’ four-game winning streak. Gomez dropped Neil Walker’s fly ball leading off the fifth and our run-scoring hits followed.

Karstens (5-3) allowed seven hits in seven-plus innings, with no walks and four strikeouts. He left the game after injuring his right groin with two on and no outs in the eighth. Marcum gave up five hits and four runs (none earned) with one walk and five strikeouts in five innings.

Karstens also drove in a run in the fifth with a single to center, scoring Michael McKenry, who doubled home Walker with the game’s first run. Jose Tabata doubled home Karstens and Travis Snider singled home Tabata to give Pittsburgh a 4-0 advantage.

Snider robbed Milwaukee’s Ryan Braun of an extra-base hit in the first with a leaping catch at the top of the wall in right field.
