Reds 3, Cubs 1: Ryan Hanigan hit a three-run double and Homer Bailey pitched 7 1/3 strong innings as visiting Cincinnati took the opener of the three-game series.

After Justin Germano (2-8) began the sixth inning by walking the bases loaded, Manuel Corpas came on and retired Scott Rolen. Hanigan then ripped a shot into the right-center field gap, clearing the bases and guiding the National League Central-leading Reds to their fifth win in seven games.

It was more than enough support for Bailey (12-9), who allowed one run and four hits in improving to 8-2 on the road. Sean Marshall got the final two outs in the eighth and Jonathan Broxton worked a perfect ninth for his 26th save of the season and third with the Reds, who maintained their 11-game division lead over St. Louis while tying Washington for the most wins in the NL (89).

Germano yielded three runs on as many hits and five walks in five innings en route to his sixth straight loss.

Darwin Barney went 2-for-3 and scored the lone run for the Cubs, who fell to 2-3 on their 10-game homestand. Barney, whose hitting streak is at 13 games, has recorded two hits in four of his last five contests.

GAME NOTEBOOK: The game was the 3,000th of Dusty Baker's managerial career, which began in 1993 with San Francisco. Cincinnati's skipper has a record of 1,573-1,426 with the Giants, Cubs and Reds. ... Chicago 2B Barney extended his NL-record errorless streak to 133 consecutive games. He has made one error in 143 contests this season. ... After recording both of Chicago's hits in Monday's loss to Pittsburgh, Barney registered two of the Cubs' first three hits against Cincinnati.
