Padres 7, Cubs 4:
Carlos Quentin hit a three-run homer and Ross Ohlendorf pitched six strong innings as host San Diego jumped out early and held off Chicago.

Chase Headley drove in two runs and scored a pair and Everth Cabrera recorded two RBIs for the Padres, who have won three straight and four of five.

San Diego spoiled the major league debut of left-hander Brooks Raley (0-1), getting to the 24-year-old for four runs in the third and three more in the fourth. Raley allowed the first five batters to reach in the third, with Headley and Cabrera each recording two-run singles to stake the Padres to a 4-0 lead.

Raley got two quick outs in the fourth before running into trouble again. Logan Forsythe and Headley singled in front of Quentin, who took a 2-1 breaking ball into the front row in left-center for his 12th home run and a 7-0 edge.

The Cubs pinch hit for Raley in the top of the fifth, leaving the youngster with seven runs allowed on eight hits and three walks. He struck out four.

Ohlendorf (4-2) cruised through the first four innings scoreless and ended up charged with three runs (two earned) and three hits while walking one and striking out three to snap a two-start losing streak.

Chicago grabbed a run in the fifth on Darwin Barney’s RBI double down the left field line and struck for three in the seventh. Rookie Josh Vitters had the big hit in that rally, driving a two-run double into the left-center field gap for his first major league hit.

Huston Street worked a scoreless ninth for his 20th save in as many chances.

GAME NOTEBOOK: Quentin has recorded an extra-base hit in three straight games, totaling five RBIs in that span. … Raley will likely get another chance to start for the Cubs with RHP Matt Garza (triceps) likely out for the rest of the season. Garza was placed on the DL to open a spot for Raley on Tuesday. … Chicago LF Alfonso Soriano was scratched from the lineup after injuring his right hand sliding into second base on Monday night. … Cubs RH Jeff Samardzija will face off against San Diego lefty Clayton Richard in the series finale Wednesday.
