Tigers 6, Twins 3:
Miguel Cabrera and Andy Dirks each drove in a pair of runs and Prince Fielder went 4-for-4 as visiting Detroit handed last-place Minnesota its fourth consecutive loss.

The Tigers busted open a tie game with four runs in the fifth against Carl Pavano (2-4). Quintin Berry had an RBI single and scored on a two-run double by Dirks. Cabrera’s second RBI of the day, coming on a one-out base hit, made it 6-2.

The Tigers drew first blood when Cabrera and Fielder drove in runs in the first inning, but Minnesota got one run back in the bottom of the frame and tied it an inning later on Justin Morneau’s solo homer.

Denard Span homered in the fifth for the Twins, who brought the tying run to the plate with one out in the eighth but failed to score.

Max Scherzer (4-3) went 5 1/3 innings for the win, striking out nine after setting down 15 in his previous start. He allowed three runs, two earned, on six hits before a rain delay cut his day short with runners on the corners and one out in the sixth. Octavio Dotel struck out four of the five hitters he faced and Joaquin Benoit worked his way out of trouble in the eighth before Jose Valverde pitched the ninth for his eighth save.

Pavano lasted 4 1/3 innings, giving up six runs on 10 hits while striking out two.
