Phillies 5, Diamondbacks 4: Ryan Howard lined a one-out single in the ninth to lift host Philadelphia past Arizona.

Howard had fanned three times in four at-bats before delivering the game-winning hit off Josh Collmenter (3-3) with the bases loaded.

Juan Pierre led off the ninth with a single and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Nate Schierholtz. Laynce Nix then singled to right on a play in which Arizona’s Justin Upton nearly made a great grab, advancing Pierre to third. Chase Utley was walked intentionally before Howard ended the contest.

Jonathan Papelbon (3-4) pitched a scoreless ninth for Philadelphia.

The Phillies tied the score in the eighth when John Mayberry singled with two out and moved to second on a wild pitch by David Hernandez. Dominic Brown followed with a hard comebacker that caromed off Hernandez’s leg. He scrambled to retrieve the ball but his underhand toss to first base deflected off Brown and rolled into foul territory and Mayberry barely beat the throw home by Arizona first baseman Paul Goldschmidt to score the tying run.

Goldschmidt gave Arizona a 4-3 lead in the sixth with a leadoff homer to right off Cliff Lee.

Chris Johnson and Stephen Drew hit back-to-back homers in a three-run third inning but couldn’t prevent the Diamondbacks from losing for just the fifth time in 16 games.

Philadelphia tallied twice in the second and tied the contest in the fifth on Chase Utley’s homer to right.

Lee allowed four runs and eight hits in eight innings. He struck out five and walked none.

Arizona starter Trevor Cahill allowed three runs and six hits in seven innings. He struck out six, walked two and recorded 13 outs on grounders.

GAME NOTEBOOK: Goldschmidt has three homers over his last six games. … Howard has struck out 15 times over the last eight games. … Diamondbacks INF Willie Bloomquist (back) missed his fifth straight game. … Utley went 2-for-4 to extend his hitting streak to six games. … Arizona C Henry Blanco left in the eighth inning after being spiked in the hand by Mayberry on the play at the plate. One batter later, Hernandez departed due to Brown’s ball that hit his leg.
