Dodgers 8, Marlins 2: Adrian Gonzalez made an immediate impact with his new team and Andre Ethier went 4-for-4 to match a franchise record as host Los Angeles inched closer to first place in the National League West.
Acquired earlier in the day along with Josh Beckett, Carl Crawford and Nick Punto in a blockbuster trade with the Boston Red Sox, Gonzalez received a standing ovation when he stepped to the plate in the bottom of the first inning. With two on and the game tied 1-1, Gonzalez deposited Josh Johnson's second pitch into the seats in right field for a 4-1 lead.
Gonzalez became the sixth player to homer in his first at-bat as a Los Angeles Dodger and first since Juan Rivera accomplished the feat last season.
Ethier posted his second straight 4-for-4 performance and has recorded a hit in 10 consecutive at-bats, matching the franchise record set in 1919 by Ed Konetchy of the Brooklyn Robins. Ethier, who fell a triple shy of the cycle, gave the Dodgers a 7-2 advantage with a leadoff homer in the fifth inning.
Mark Ellis went 3-for-4 with a solo blast and Luis Cruz had two RBIs to help support Clayton Kershaw (12-7), who allowed two runs and three hits over eight innings. Kershaw, who walked two and struck out eight, has yielded three runs or less in each of his last seven starts.
Ronald Belisario worked a perfect ninth to complete the three-hitter for the Dodgers, who climbed within two games of the division-leading San Francisco Giants.
Johnson (7-11) lasted only three innings as he surrendered six runs and 10 hits en route to his fourth straight loss. The right-hander suffered his first loss in five career outings at Dodger Stadium.
Giancarlo Stanton homered for the seventh time in 10 games for the Marlins, who lost their fourth in a row and fell to 4-6 on their 11-game road trip. Stanton has hit 15 of his 28 home runs this season against NL West teams.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Ethier's string of 10 straight hits was a franchise record since the team moved to Los Angeles, eclipsing the mark held by Ron Cey (9-for-9, 1977). ... Dodgers RHP Chad Billingsley was placed on the 15-day disabled list with right elbow pain. Billingsley left Friday's victory after 3 1/3 innings with the injury. ... Stanton's homer was the 84th of his career, tying him with Mickey Mantle and Andruw Jones for ninth place on the all-time list of players with the most blasts before the age of 23. ... RHP Beckett will make his Dodgers debut Monday at Colorado.
