Cardinals 3, Marlins 2: Backup catcher Tony Cruz hit an opposite-field two-run triple and Kyle Lohse pitched seven strong innings as host St. Louis evened its series with Miami, which lost slugger Giancarlo Stanton to a knee injury.

Stanton, who started for the first time in five days, aggravated the injury and left in the third inning. The team announced after the game that Stanton, who was supposed to play in Tuesday's All-Star Game, will undergo knee surgery and is expected to miss 4-to-6 weeks.

Cruz, starting because All-Star Yadier Molina is on the bereavement list, put the Cardinals ahead 3-2 in the fourth with his triple down the right-field line.

Lohse (9-2) allowed two runs on three hits, striking out four and walking one. Jason Motte worked around two ninth-inning singles for his 20th save.

Marlins right fielder Justin Ruggiano homered for the fourth time in six games, a two-run shot that extended his hitting streak to 10 games. The no-doubt shot in the second inning scored Stanton.

Carlos Zambrano (4-7) allowed three runs on seven hits in five innings, falling to 12-8 lifetime against the Cardinals.

Cards left fielder Matt Holliday went 1-for-3 with a walk to extend his hitting streak to 10 games.
