Braves 3, Cubs 1: Dan Uggla's third hit, a two-run, two-out single in the eighth inning, lifted visiting Atlanta over Chicago and hard-luck right-hander Ryan Dempster.

Randall Delgado yielded one run in 5 2/3 strong innings and the Braves got stellar work from their bullpen to bounce back from a series-opening loss to the Cubs.

Dempster saw another superb effort go for naught after reliever Kerry Wood (0-2) was tagged for the two runs in the eighth inning.

Dempster allowed one run on six hits in seven innings while striking out seven but remained winless in 14 starts dating to Aug. 11, 2011. The Cubs have scored only eight runs in his five starts this season.

The Braves got their only run off Dempster when Jason Heyward tripled to lead off the fifth and scored on rookie Tyler Pastornicky's sacrifice fly.

Chicago tied it in the sixth on a two-out RBI double by Alfonso Soriano that ended Delgado's night.

Kris Medlen (1-0) pitched a scoreless seventh for his first win since the 2010 season and Craig Kimbrel retired the side in the ninth for his 10th save.

GAME NOTEBOOK: Braves CF Michael Bourn extended his hitting streak to 12 games. ... Cubs 1B Bryan LaHair walked in the second inning and has reached base in 26 consecutive games. It is the longest streak by a Cubs first baseman since Derrek Lee's 30-game run in 2009. ... Wood, whose ERA soared to 14.54, tossed his glove and hat into the stands after giving up the go-ahead runs in the eighth.
