Yankees 5, Nationals 3 (14):
Mark Teixeira doubled in two runs in the top of the 14th inning as visiting New York outlasted Washington to pick up its eighth straight win.

Jayson Nix led off the 14th against Brad Lidge (0-1) with a single to left before stealing second base. Derek Jeter followed with a single to left and Curtis Granderson struck out, bringing up Teixeira. The slugger worked the count to 2-1 and ripped a slider down the right field line to plate the pair.

Freddy Garcia (1-2) worked two scoreless innings to earn the win and Rafael Soriano earned his 12th save for the Yankees, who clinched a win in the three-game series against the NL East-leading Nationals.

Washington tied it against the New York bullpen in the eighth. Cory Wade got the first two outs quickly but Ian Desmond, whose error allowed an unearned run to score in the fourth, ripped a 2-2 fastball into the seats in left to tie it at 3-3.

It looked like Washington had taken the lead later in the frame when Adam LaRoche singled to right with Tyler Moore on second. Moore appeared to get his hand to the plate in front of the tag but was called out by home plate umpire Tim Timmons.

Andy Pettitte, who turned 40 on Friday, struck out six and walked three while allowing two runs and five hits. The left-hander has allowed two earned runs or less in five of seven starts since coming out of retirement.

The Nationals grabbed the early lead in the second inning but New York chipped away against Jordan Zimmermann, capitalizing on Desmond’s error for an unearned run in the fourth before finally breaking through with two runs in the sixth.

GAME NOTEBOOK:
Nationals rookie Bryce Harper went 0-for-7 with a career-high five strikeouts. … Because of the extra innings, the Nationals staged a second Presidential race in the 13th inning. Teddy Roosevelt lost, as usual. … Nick Swisher, who got his leg caught under Jesus Flores on the play at the plate in the sixth, was diagnosed with a bruised left quad.
