Yankees 5, Red Sox 4: Curtis Granderson hit a pair of long home runs and totaled three RBIs as visiting New York bounced back against rival Boston.

Robinson Cano added a two-run homer and David Phelps (4-4) was solid through 5 2/3 innings for the Yankees, who remain tied with the Baltimore Orioles atop the American League East. The Orioles beat third-place Tampa Bay on Wednesday.

It was not all good news for New York, as Derek Jeter left the game in the eighth inning. Jeter hit the first base bag awkwardly after grounding into a double play and was attended to by trainers before exiting with an ankle injury.

Aaron Cook (3-10) started out strong for the Red Sox but could not keep his sinker down the second time through the lineup. Boston has dropped 12 of its last 14 games.

Granderson got things started for the Yankees in the fourth, when he ripped a high sinker over the Boston bullpen in right-center for a solo blast. Alex Rodriguez followed with a single and Cano made it a three-run frame by lifting his 30th homer the opposite way over the Green Monster in left.

Granderson followed Jeter’s leadoff single in the seventh with another drive, this time off Alfredo Aceves, over the New York bullpen in right for his 37th blast.

Boston got to the New York bullpen for a pair of runs in the bottom of the seventh but David Robertson retired the first two batters in the eighth, and Rafael Soriano allowed a solo homer but got the final four outs for his 37th save.

Jarrod Saltalamacchia finished a single shy of the cycle for the Red Sox.

GAME NOTEBOOK: Jeter recorded two more hits, bringing his career total to 3,282 and his season mark to 194. He needs two more hits to pass Willie Mays (3,283) for 10th on the all-time list and six more to lock up his eighth season of 200 or more. … Red Sox 2B Dustin Pedroia left the game after the sixth inning. He and his wife have been expecting a baby. … New York LHP Andy Pettitte (ankle) threw 55 pitches in a simulated game Wednesday afternoon. He will be examined again on Friday. … Saltalamacchia was back in Boston’s lineup after missing three games with back spasms. … The Red Sox activated RHP Scott Atchison (elbow) from the 60-day DL and moved LHP Franklin Morales to the 60-day DL, officially ending his season.
