Orioles 9, Red Sox 6: Adam Jones hit a three-run homer off Darnell McDonald in the top of the 17th inning as Baltimore completed a three-game sweep with a victory in a marathon contest that saw both teams use position players as pitchers.

J.J. Hardy went 5-for-8 with a pair of solo homers and Robert Andino also went deep for the Orioles, who completed a 5-1 road trip with their 11th win in 13 games.

Baltimore infielder Chris Davis (1-0) got out of a jam in the 16th when Jones threw out Marlon Byrd at the plate to end the inning. An outfielder, McDonald (0-1) started the 17th for Boston and put two on before Jones launched a 1-1 pitch over the Green Monster to snap the 6-6 tie.

McDonald, who entered the game as a pinch runner for David Ortiz in the eighth and remained the designated hitter, came to the plate as the tying run with one out in the bottom of the 17th. But Davis induced a double-play grounder to end the longest major-league game of the season.

Baltimore jumped out to a 5-0 lead as Hardy belted solo homers in the first and third innings and Andino launched a three-run shot in the fourth. All three blasts came off Clay Buchholz, who lasted just 3 2/3 innings.

The Red Sox got on the board in the bottom of the fourth on Ryan Sweeney's RBI single. They pulled even an inning later as rookie Will Middlebrooks belted a grand slam off Tommy Hunter for his first career homer and RBIs.

Mark Reynolds gave Baltimore a 6-5 edge with an RBI double in the top of the eighth after Boston catcher Jarrod Saltalamacchia committed a pair of errors. Saltalamacchia atoned for his miscue in the bottom half with a sacrifice fly that plated McDonald with the tying run.

Sweeney recorded four hits for the Red Sox, who have lost five in a row and 10 of 11 at home.

GAME NOTEBOOK: Boston placed right-hander Aaron Cook on the 15-day disabled list with a laceration on his left knee, which he suffered Saturday. Left-hander Andrew Miller was activated from the DL to take Cook's roster spot. ... Buchholz has allowed five earned runs or more in each of his six starts this season. ... Baltimore needed 39 innings to complete the sweep as Friday's series opener lasted 13 frames. ... Hardy's two-homer performance was the eighth of his career.
