Brett Pill homered in his first major league at-bat and the San Francisco Giants defeated the host San Diego Padres 6-4 on Tuesday to move within six games of Arizona in the National League West.

Eric Surkamp (1-0) earned his first career win while giving up three runs over five innings, and Ramon Ramirez struck out Jesus Guzman with the bases loaded in the ninth for his fourth save.

Pill hit a two-run blast in the second to become the first Giants player to homer in his first major league at-bat since Will Clark on April 8, 1986. He joins Clark and Johnnie LeMaster as the only players in team history to homer in their first plate appearance.

Carlos Beltran added three hits and three RBIs after missing Monday’s game because of food poisoning. Beltran is batting .733 (11-for-15) through four September games.

Wade LeBlanc (2-5) allowed four runs and eight hits over five innings for the Padres, who have lost 11 of their last 12 games.

San Diego catcher Nick Hundley, who homered for the second straight game, is hitting .391 (27-for-69) with 14 extra base-hits since returning from the disabled list on Aug. 12.
