James McDonald combined with four relievers on a six-hitter as the Pittsburgh Pirates posted a 2-0 home victory over the San Francisco Giants on Wednesday.

Chris Snyder and Jose Tabata each had an RBI single while Neil Walker and Steve Pearce notched two hits apiece for the Pirates, who improved to 3-2 on their six-game homestand.

McDonald (1-2) rebounded from a disastrous outing at Florida on Thursday, allowing only four singles in six-plus innings with four walks and three strikeouts. Three relievers bridged the gap to Joel Hanrahan, who allowed two baserunners in the ninth before notching his seventh save in as many chances.

After McDonald escaped a jam in the top of the second, Walker led off the bottom half with a single and moved to third on Pearce's double before scoring on a base hit by Snyder.

Madison Bumgarner retired the next three batters to avoid further damage, and struck out McDonald with the bases loaded and two outs in the fourth to keep San Francisco's deficit at 1-0.

The Pirates doubled their lead in the seventh as Tabata delivered a two-out single off Guillermo Mota to plate Brandon Wood.

Bumgarner (0-4) was the hard-luck loser as he yielded one run and five hits in six innings with seven strikeouts.

Cody Ross had two hits for the Giants, who lost for the fifth time in six contests and dropped to 1-1 on their 10-game road trip.
