Scott Cousins belted his first career homer - a grand slam, in fact - and Brett Hayes added a three-run shot as the Florida Marlins completed a three-game sweep of the Pittsburgh Pirates with a 9-5 triumph on Thursday.
Mike Stanton chipped in a solo blast for his first homer of the season and scored three runs for the Marlins, who have won six of their last seven games.
After a pair of dominating pitching performances from Josh Johnson and Ricky Nolasco in the first two games of the series, Florida decided to do it with the bats on Thursday. The Marlins pounded James McDonald (0-2) for eight runs in the first three innings.
The rookie Cousins delivered the big blow in a five-run second. After a pair of walks and a single, Cousins blasted the first pitch he saw from McDonald and driving it over the wall in right for his first homer. The Marlins would add a run on a fielder’s choice later in the frame to cap the rally.
Hayes delivered his blast in the third to turn it into a rout.
Pittsburgh would get to Chris Volstad (1-1) for five runs in 5 1/3 innings but could not crawl out of the early hole.
