Don Kelly homered and drove in two runs as the Detroit Tigers won the American League Central division title with a 3-1 victory over the host Oakland Athletics on Friday.

Doug Fister (9-13) gave up one run on three hits with no walks on 91 pitches over eight innings to win his fifth straight decision.

Detroit, which clinched its first division title since winning the American League East in 1987, is headed to the postseason for the 13th time in franchise history. The Tigers were the American League wild card when they lost the 2006 World Series to the St. Louis Cardinals.

Jose Valverde worked around Coco Crisp’s leadoff double in the ninth inning for his 45th consecutive save.

Fister, who improved to 6-1 since being acquired from Seattle on July 30, has allowed four earned runs over 44 2/3 innings in his past six starts.

Athletics starter Trevor Cahill (11-14) allowed three runs over 6 2/3 innings for the Athletics, who snapped the Tigers’ 12-game winning streak Thursday.

Josh Willingham gave Oakland a 1-0 lead with his career-high 27th homer in the second.
